Tips for Landscaping Around Your AC Installation

Springtime is in full swing, and with it, you’re likely spending more time outside beautifying your Wilmington, NC, yard. When you’re inside, you’re more reliant on your air conditioner than you were a couple of months ago. Discover four tips for landscaping around your AC installation to keep it running at its best.

Leave Room Around the Outdoor Unit

It’s important to keep plants and other landscaping materials away from your outdoor air conditioning unit. When you obstruct the airflow around the unit, you not only decrease the system’s energy efficiency, but you may also increase repair issues. Generally, you should plan on leaving two or three feet between your AC unit and the nearest plants or lawn decorations.

Establish a Boundary With Evergreen Plants

You can create a windbreak around your air conditioner by using evergreen plants. While these come in especially handy during spring and summer storms, the protection they provide lasts all year long. Trim the bushes so nothing grows closer to your air conditioner, and be sure to plant them two to three feet away.

Be Smart With Décor

Ultimately, AC condensers are unattractive, and there isn’t much you can do to make a large metal box visually appealing. If you want to beautify the area around your AC system, you do have some options.

Consider using a lattice or a trellis to create a ventilated wall around the unit. You can paint it to complement your home without hindering the airflow that your air conditioner needs.

Create Some Shade

When deciding how you want to landscape around your AC installation, look for opportunities to create some shade. If the system is in an area of your property that gets a lot of sun, try to arrange the evergreen plants or ventilated walls in a way that creates some shade. Be sure to leave one side of the boundary clear so the system remains accessible for repairs and maintenance.
