When you’re ready to make a serious long-term investment in your home’s climate control, look no further than the power of geothermal energy. Geothermal heating and cooling
How Geothermal Heat Pumps Work
A regular air-source heat pump works by exchanging heat with the outside air. In the winter, the heat pump absorbs heat from the outside air to heat the home; in the summer, the cycle reverses and the system collects heat from the indoor air, pumping it outside.
Geothermal heat pumps use the same principle, but instead of depending on the outside air, they use the stable temperatures found underground. Geothermal energy provides highly efficient heating and cooling all year long, no matter how hot or cold the temperatures.
Types of Geothermal Systems
A geothermal system consists of two major components: an above-ground heat pump and an underground loop that exchanges heat with the ground. There are three commonly used loop configurations:
- Horizontal Loop: This type of loop is buried fairly shallow underground and takes up a wide area at the surface level. Horizontal loops are less expensive to install but can be somewhat susceptible to shifts in the outside temperature. They are generally preferred for residential projects.
- Vertical Loop: This type of loop extends deep into the ground, taking up minimal space at the surface level and providing extremely efficient climate control because of the stable temperatures deep underground. The main downside of a vertical loop is cost, due to the amount of excavation required. Vertical loops are typically used in commercial and urban settings.
- Water-Source Loop: This type of loop can only be used if you have a pond or similar water feature on your property. Water-source systems may be the most efficient of all, depending on the depth of the water.
An experienced geothermal contractor can help you choose the right solution for your home or business.
Your Dependable Local Geothermal Contractor
Geothermal energy is a powerful long-term climate control solution. The underground loop should last 50 years or more, and the aboveground components are good for 25 years with minimal maintenance. That’s why it’s important to have a geothermal contractor you can trust. We build our geothermal services around our five core values:
